Hollie Dunkley
Hollie Dunkley has been performing throughout Southern Ontario since she began singing with Arcady in 1993. She has appeared as soprano and alto soloist with a number of ensembles including Arcady and the John Laing Singers, and was soprano section lead at St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Oakville for three years before returning to Hamilton in 2006 to sing as second soprano section lead with Centenary Choral Society. Onstage she has appeared as Lady Thiang in The King and I and Lady Sangazure in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Sorcerer. Recent concert performances include Jenkin’s Requiem, Daley’s Requiem, Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, Glick’s Triumph of the Spirit, Handel’s Messiah, and Vivaldi’s Gloria. Hollie is currently a choral scholar at Christ’s Church Cathedral, Hamilton, and recently debuted the role of The Dragon in John Laing’s staged operetta Sir George and the Dragon.
Abigail Freeman
Abigail Freeman recently completed a Master of Music Degree in Voice Performance at Binghamton University, New York. Her engaging presence has lent itself well to such roles as Fanchette (Le mariage aux lanternes), Ilia (Idomeneo), Adina (L'elisir d'amore), Adele (Die Fledermaus), and Lakmé. The young Canadian soprano has also delighted listeners with her expressive singing in the soprano oratorio roles of Handel's Messiah, Vivaldi's Gloria, J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion and J.S. Bach's cantatas, Wachet, betet, betet, wachet and Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme.
Laura McAlpine
Laura McAlpine is a native of Winnipeg where she studied acting and stage training and was a Manitoba Provincial Music Festival finalist in 2000. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts, Music Specialist, Minor in German Studies from the University of Toronto. Laura’s recent mezzo-soprano stage performances include Sesto from Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito with Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, and Vera Boronel from Menotti’s The Consul with Tryptych Productions. She is presently the alto soloist at Deer Park United Church in Toronto. Laura was, along with soprano Catherine Lippitt, a recipient of Arcady 2007 Young Artist Program. .
Kelly McLean
Kelly McLean is an accomplished choral mezzo-soprano, having sung with a long list of ensembles including the Boris Brott Festival Choir, the John Lang Singers, the Centenary Choral Society under Shawn Grenke, Arcady lead by Ronald Beckett, and has most recently completed an Ontario tour with the Canadian Chamber Choir under the direction of Dr. Julia Davids. Kelly obtained her B.Mus from McMaster University where she studied classical voice and piano and focused on tonal theory and harmony. In addition to her proficiencies in several different instruments including piano, guitar, saxophone and percussion, she has a broad musical theatre and jazz background and is also an accomplished accompanist and actor. Ms. McLean is well known by her friends for her wildly eclectic taste in music, and believes strongly that both renaissance motets and speed metal bands can be equally enjoyed by the discerning musical ear. .
Jennifer Enns Modolo
Jennifer Enns Modolo has been active as a soloist in the Kitchener-Waterloo region and sung with several groups throughout Southern Ontario. Recent roles include Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and C.P.E. Bach’s Magnificat with the Elora Festival Singers, Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Grand River Chorus, Tovey’s Requiem with Kitchener-Waterloo Philharmonic Choir, Mozart’s Vespers with Menno Singers, Bach’s Missa Brevis and Handel's Messiah with Elora Festival Singers, Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Mozart’s Requiem with Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. In concert, she has appeared as guest soloist with the early music ensemble Greensleeves, premiered Michael Purves-Smith’s Woodland Portraits: in Oil, Words and Music with Leith Quartet, and has performed Respighi’s Il Tramonto with Waterloo Chamber Players. In 2003, Jennifer performed the title role in Rossini’s La Cenerentola with Orford Arts Centre in Quebec. In 2002, she made her debut with Ontario Opera Chorus in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. Other opera roles include Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Weill’s Street Scene, and the premiere of Daryl Jamieson’s Mandragola. Jennifer has won Kiwanis music scholarships at both the local and provincial level and is a recent recipient of the NATS Most Promising Senior University Level Singer scholarship. In 2004, she was a finalist in the Annual Solo Competition with the Oratorio Society of New York.
Erin Grainger
Erin Grainger sang the title role of Rinaldo this year with Summer Opera Lyric Theatre. Operatic repertoire includes the roles of The Mother in The Consul, Zita in Gianni Schicchi, Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Pisandro in Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria. She has developed a keen interest in new opera since creating roles in a trilogy of operas by Canadian composer Ronald Beckett, including the role of Naomi in Ruth, and recently sang the role of Longfellow in the première production of Julian Wachner's Evangéline Revisited. Last season she debuted with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra singing Mozart's Requiem. Recent oratorio performances have included Saint-Saëns' Oratorio de Noël with L'orchestre symphonique de Longueuil, Handel Messiah, Utrecht Jubilate & Dixit Dominus, Haydn Paukenmesse, Liszt Via Crucis & Missa Choralis, and Vivaldi Gloria with the Orpheus Choir of Toronto and the Arcady Baroque Ensemble. Erin has family roots in the Ottawa Valley and Port Dover, Ontario. She holds a graduate degree from McGill University and undergraduate degrees from the Universities of Western Ontario and Toronto. She is based in Montréal.
Marta Herman
Marta Herman Marta Herman is making her mark as a young singer to watch. Her operatic roles include The Secretary in The Consul (Halifax Summer Opera), Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel (Opera NUOVA), and Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte (Halifax Summer Opera); Opera Canada has written of her performances that "Marta Herman sang superbly" (F/W ’07) and she was "delightful as an obnoxious secretary who finally becomes human" (F/W ’08). In addition to her experience in opera, Marta is equally dedicated to her involvement to the performance of new music; in spring ‘08 she sang the role of Tessie in the premiere of The Lottery, a new Canadian opera by Anthony Aceti, with whom she is currently collaborating on a song cycle. She is part of several new music ensembles, Das Studium Postmoderner Musik, and the University of Western Ontario Contemporary Techniques Ensemble, under the direction of John Hess. Exploring the early music repertory, Marta has appeared as a soloist with the Bach Aria Group, directed by Kevin McMillan. Equally important is her involvement in recitals fundraising for various charities, including Breast Cancer Run for the Cure. Currently in her final year at the University of Western Ontario, she has also been accepted into several elite Canadian young artist summer programs (Opera Nuova, COAA). She is supported by the Canadian Polish Millennium Fund, the recipient of awards from the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and a prize winner in the Young Polish Musicians Competition. In spring 2009, Marta sang the role of Dame Doleful in the UWOpera production of Too Many Sopranos.
Jessica Lloyd
Jessica Lloyd is currently pursuing her Doctor of Music at the University of Texas at Austin as the recipient of the Garwood Centennial Scholarship in Art Song. She received her Bachelor of Music at the University of Toronto and her Masters at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Miss Lloyd has performed with the Orpheus Choir of Toronto, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the North York Symphony and has been a regular singer with Arcady since 1987. She can be seen on both the Bravo! and wtn television networks in a music video filmed in 1999 with Marble Media and Canadian composer John Weinzweig. She was awarded top honours at the first annual "Stars over Norfolk" music competition at Cranberry Creek Church in Lynedoch, Ontario and "Haldimand Idol" in a similar competition in Caledonia.
Alison Neale
Alison Neale is a well-rounded, versatile performer. Having studied voice, piano, drama, various dance styles and aerial acrobatics, she has proven herself as a passionate and disciplined artist. Favoured performances include tributes to Duke Ellington, Muhammed Ali, a press release for the Toronto launch of Disney’s The Lion King with the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, a short film (Cinnamon Hill) with HERetic productions for Bravo! FACT, a radio commercial for Motown Recording artist Erykah Badu, an impromptu performance at the royal military court in Brasov, Romania, and a starring role in the Treehouse television series 4 Square.
Sonja van de Hoef
Sonja van de Hoef graduated with her Bachelor of Music in Honours Church Music from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario where she studied organ with Jan Overduin, voice with Patricia Pascoe and choral conducting with Noel Edison. Ms. van de Hoef served as the assistant director for the Laurier Chapel Choir and as Choir Master at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waterloo. She is currently the Director of Worship and Children’s Ministries at Knox Presbyterian Church in Milton where she leads the adult and children’s choirs and is organist/pianist. Ms. van de Hoef is also the founder/director of the Adoramus Children’s Choir in Milton. She is currently studying voice with Glen Gardiner. While this energetic young musician claims that "choral conducting is my passion", she has studied piano, voice and organ and has a private studio in Milton where she teaches voice, piano, theory and harmony.
Meagan Zantingh
Meagan Zantingh has recently completed her MMus at McGill University. Meagan’s opera production experience includes the role of Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, the role of Dorothée in Massenet’s Cendrillon, and the role of Sylvane in Lehar’s The Merry Widow. She has also participated in three summer opera programs, developing her skills through acting and movement classes and opera scenes workshops. Over the past few years, she has organized and performed in annual benefit concerts, repeatedly singing to a sold out audience. Also in the Early Music field, Meagan is gaining experience as a soloist and as a chorister. She has her A.R.C.T. Performanc diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music and her Honours Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Ontario..
